WHAT TO WATCH FOR

When a recurring charge was not clear

A recurring payment begins without a sufficiently clear, deliberate understanding that the transaction will renew. The customer may believe they are buying one item, accepting a free trial, or selecting a one-time add-on.

HOW IT SHOWS UP

What you might run into

A trial, add-on, or checkout choice may become a renewing plan that is difficult to identify later.

HOW TO HANDLE IT

What to do next

Check the receipt and statement, identify the biller, cancel renewal, and separately request a refund when appropriate.

COMPANY EXAMPLES

What this looks like in real life

Open a company to see the full cancellation guide, or follow the source link to check the record yourself. Labels make it clear whether an example is current, reported by a regulator or customers, or drawn from an older source. No single example sums up everything a company does.

Fabletics says members must skip between the 1st and 5th to avoid that month’s charge, but skipping leaves VIP active. Cancellation is a separate request, and one current membership page says it can take effect after 30 days. If leaving, do not rely on Skip the Month: submit cancellation, record its effective date, ask whether another monthly charge can occur during processing and save the confirmation. Review unused credit expiration separately.

Blue Apron’s current terms distinguish Subscribe & Save meal orders from the monthly or annual Blue Apron+ shipping membership. Thrive Market’s terms separate the automatically renewing membership from recurring product shipments. Most members are directed to a virtual agent, email, chat or phone, while California members may have an account-page route. First-time annual members have a published 30-day refund window, but later fees are generally non-refundable. Cancel the membership and every recurring shipment separately, save the effective date and do not place a new order after cancellation if you do not intend to reactivate.

Recent reports describe charges after users believed cancellation was complete. One 2026 report says later viewing was treated as reactivation while paid access remained available. Save the final confirmation and access-end date, avoid using the account after cancellation if the page warns that doing so will restart service, and check the next statement. SPOT IT EARLY

Signs to look for

  1. A low-cost trial converts to a monthly plan without a prominent renewal date and price.
  2. A one-time order quietly includes enrollment in a recurring membership.
  3. The statement uses a billing name that does not match the brand the customer recognizes.

Use these signs as a quick check. The company records above show where similar behavior has been documented.

BEFORE YOU START

Leave with proof, not a promise

  1. Identify the company or app store that actually bills you.
  2. Record the renewal date, notice deadline and current plan name.
  3. Choose cancellation rather than pause, downgrade or a reminder.
  4. Check add-ons, financed equipment and separate subscriptions.
  5. Save the confirmation, effective date and final amount.
  6. Review the next statement and escalate with your evidence if another charge appears.
